Domains guide

What is a domain and do I need a .com?

A domain is your website address. For example, David & George’s website address is davidandgeorge.co.uk.

We also have a .com just in case someone types that in. We would recommend owning the both the .com and .co.uk where possible.

We use .co.uk as our primary domain because we are based in the UK and work primarily with UK clients. Having a .co.uk lets Google know that you are UK based and increases the likelihood that you will be shown in search results to UK users.

However, if your users are international it makes sense to use a .com or other international domain.

Other popular domains include .me and .uk. These can be strong alternatives if the .com and .co.uk are taken.

Where should I buy my domain?

123-reg is the UK’s main domain provider. Godaddy is also a solid choice.

It is now possible to purchase domains though Squarespace although it tends to be more expensive than other registrars.

My domain is under the control of my previous web developer, can you liaise with them?

Yes, please see our domain connection through previous web developer service.

What is the difference between a domain connection and a domain transfer?

A domain connection is when the domain is pointed to your website. So anyone who clicks on or types in your domain will be taken to your website even though your domain is registered somewhere else.

A domain transfer is when the registrar is changed. So instead of paying Godaddy for your domain, you might pay 123-Reg.

A transfer is not usually necessary to point the domain to your website. The only reason you would need to transfer a domain is if you are unhappy with the current registrar or the domain is being held in someone else’s account and you cannot get access to it.

We offer both domain connections and domain transfers.
