What Is Website Branding — and Do I Really Need It for my Squarespace Website?
A guide to branding basics for your new website
When we start building a website for a client, one of the first things we ask is:
“Do you already have branding?
What Is Branding?
Branding is more than a logo.
At the highest level it is knowledge / understanding about your brand, its values, ethos, challenges and aims.
At a design level its the visual language we can apply to your website.
It’s made up of things like:
Your Logo
Any other assets like icons etc
Colour palette (in a website setting we usually advise to keep it simple and pared back)
Your Typography (fonts / usage)
The images that you select
The tone of your words ( conveyed in your text copy )
Your message and values ( conveyed in your text copy )
Together, these elements build trust, emotion and recognition.
Why It Matters for Your Website
Branding gives your website a coherent & consistent feeling that should resonate with your intended audience..
With branding, your site can be more:
Recognisable
Professional
Aligned with your ideal audience
Consistent across everything you share (social, email, business cards)
And that consistency builds trust — which is what turns visitors into clients, buyers, and fans.
Do I Need Full Branding Before My Website IS STARTED?
Ideally for a higher value brand or professional business you should have already have visual branding in place.
If you don’t have a professionally ( or self ) created visual brand ( like logo / colours / font choice etc ) - then we can either quote for our external brand designer to create this for you - or you can arrange that separately.
If you don’t have a logo and are on a tight budget and don’t want to pay to create one - then we can select simple classic fonts and put your business name in “live text” - we often do this for artists, luxury holiday properties and some micro businesses ( at no extra charge ) - or you can have a go yourself.
You can also check out some of the AI tools like Fivers Logo Ai that can give good results for a small fee.
Remember you can always refresh your brand later on down the road so this shouldn’t be a stumbling block to getting a much better website out there and working for you.
Final Thought from David & George:
Website branding isn’t all about being perfect or polished.
It’s about being clear, consistent, and unmistakably You.
